Justice & Tame Impala - Neverender

Jan 2025

Justice’s two halves, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, are widely associated with “indietronica” and “indie sleaze” scenes in the late '00s. Their 2007 dance hit, “D.A.N.C.E.,” took off and remains their biggest hit today. Their influential sound combines elements of electronic, rock and funk.

Justice and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker partnered on “Neverender” for the latest album Hyperdrama, released in 2024.

Sticking with Justice’s prominent style, “Neverender” keeps its lyricism simple and instrumentation complex. The result is an addicting track that employs a juxtaposition of structures and individual sounds.

I did a full cover with all the instruments and vocals for Neverender, check out the video and follow the tutorial below!

BUILD THE SYNTHS SOUNDS FROM JUSTICE 'NEVERENDER'

Let's dive in! This song is completely electronic with synthesizers, without electric guitars or basses.

First thing to do was to recreate the main pad. When I heard it, I immediately thought of the TAL-U-NO to generate a sound like that. With the following parameters I got a similar sound, listen to it solo!

Justice 'Neverender' - Main Pad

In the song you can hear a clear “pumping” effect where the volume goes up and down like a wave. To do this, use the OneKnob Pumper from Waves, which is super simple! Listen to the result here.

Around minute 0:50 of the song, there is also a filter cutting the highs on this pad, listen to it here.

This pad is enough to recreate almost 100% of its sound (I thought it wasn't going to be that easy!), however, I have added a second layer with a pad 2 with a more percussive sound where you can hear the keystrokes more. It has similar parameters to the previous one and it sounds like this.

Justice 'Neverender' - Pad 2

Listen to pad 1 and pad 2 together!

Throughout the song I used a synth bass with the following configuration to give more weight to the tonic note of each chord and add body to the sound.

Justice 'Neverender' - Synth Bass

In addition to this synth bass, I used two more to add more low and sub-bass frequencies. The parameters are as follows, listen to them below.

Now listen to the combination of all the synths at once! It sounds just like Justice, right?

Around minute 1:10 a key sound appears that adds rhythm in the high frequencies, and I have recreated in the following way. Listen to it solo and with the rest of the instruments, do you notice it?

Finally, in the bridge at minute 1:40 another pad appears, which I have recreated again with the TAL-U-NO and with a filter in automated treble that slowly opens up, listen to it solo here.

VOCALS PRODUCTION LIKE TAME IMPALA & JUSTICE 'NEVERENDER'

I've always been a fan of Tame Impala's Kevin Parker's vocals. In fact, I already have another cover of him singing 'The Less I Know the Better' which you can see here!

Kevin Parker's voice is characterized by having a high register , falsetto at times, and that has always suited my voice.

I recorded two tracks of lead vocals that play simultaneously for this song, and also two other tracks of chorus, which play at times.

To recreate his voice, I used the following chain of effects. I always start with the same chain of effects (compression, EQ, DeEsser…) that you can see in this youtube video where I talk about vocal production.

After that, I added the CLA Vocals and the Doubler from Waves, to give more power to the voice and duplicate it in stereo. In addition, they have sends to a long reverb, a medium delay, and another longer delay. Listen to how they sound now with this chain of effects. The are also some chorus doing a harmony when singing "I remember" or "Neverender", do you appreciate it?

In the intro of the song these voices sound filtered in high frequencies, and I have also applied the Kings of Microphone from Waves to give it that lofi-distorted touch. Listen to it here.

If you are interested in knowing more about vocal production, let me know by email or PM on my networks!

That's all for this time! I thought this song would be much harder to recreate, but as soon as I got the main pad sound out, I knew it was going to be much easier. Even though the original song sounds dense and powerful, it has less instrumentation than it seems, surprisingly!
